Historic MARKER

Wisconsin Curiosities

The Merry Farm of Gotham's "Historical Marker" is highlighted in "Wisconsin Curiosities: Quirky Characters, Roadside Oddities and Other Offbeat Stuff."   The story of the sculpture in the form of a large felt-tip marker, can be found on page 197.

"The only true historical MARKER can be admired in the yard of the Merry Farm of Gotham, It has a fascinating story behind it.

When a winter ice storm in February 1999 damaged a tall conifer which was a proud part of a small grove of Norwegian spruces, and when the damaged branches were cleared away, a definite shape revealed itself.

Two local woodworkers, Dennis Williams and Herb Schmidt, immediately recognized the definite lines of a true Marker and brought it to the attention of the unsuspecting owners of the grove.

The owners commissioned Michael Feeney of Mount Horeb, a noted wood sculptor, to carefully contour the Historic Marker and expose its true dimensions.

The result was the current, one and only, impressive, 9 foot tall, Historic MARKER, revealed in its original and true shape, in Wisconsin."
